A Bug’s Guide: Ways To Organize A Small Closet

Updated: Apr 25, 2020

Hey guys! So Spring is near :) Who’s excited for some warm weather? I know it’s not spring just yet, but I already did a little spring cleaning. Recently, I decided to go through everything in my closet. I had been telling myself I needed to reorganize my closet for a while. I finally got around to it. If you have a smaller closet like me, then you know the struggle of finding space for your things. I once had so many clothes hanging in my closet, the weight of them unscrewed the bar from the wall. You can say I might have a problem lol. Anyways, here are some ways to help you stay organized.

1. Categorize

First, take everything out your closet. I made a separate pile on my bed for certain things. I made a pile for dresses, pants, skirts, shirts, etc. This also includes things like purses and bags. This helps you see everything you have. You might even find something you forgot about. I actually found shoes I never even wore. I know it's bad, don't judge me lol. Now you can see all the space in your closet.

2. To Keep or Not to Keep

Second, I went through each separate pile to figure out the things I didn’t really wear anymore. If you haven’t worn something in a year or two, then it's probably best to take it out and donate it. I like the saying "quality over quantity". For example, If you have the same five white t- shirts, you might want to only keep a couple of the ones that look the best. You may be saying to yourself "you can never have enough white shirts" lol. However, if a couple of those shirts are starting to get worn out, then probably best to give it up. Same goes for shoes. Downsizing is key when it comes to having a small closet.

3. Time to Organize

Now it's time to decide how to arrange everything. So, how do you utilize your space? I'd suggest finding some bins for storage. Bins are not only useful, but can make your closet look put together. I decided to go search Dollar General and Family Dollar, because you can find inexpensive storage items there. I started with organizing my shoes. I got rid of a lot of shoe boxes by putting some of my shoes in a bin instead.

I found a storage bin with wheels & it’s low enough to put under my bed. I also like that it’s easy access. It’s better than rummaging through a whole bunch of shoe boxes, trying to find certain shoes. I use to have a shoe rack, but it was too wide. It took up most of the space on my closet floor. I also tried the door shoe hanger, but it ended up making my closet door hard to close :( However, one of those methods might work for you. Now that I store some of my shoes under the bed, I have room for other things in my closet. The fact that it's transparent is another plus.

Having a small closet means buying space saving hangers. There are many types of hangers to make your space more functional. Hangers designed to hold multiple clothing are great! It's better than trying to fit a bunch of clothes on one hanger. I have some that allow you to put a top and bottom together. They even have some called cascading hangers. You can hang clothing horizontally and then it can bend vertically. Look it up :)

Categorizing your wardrobe isn't a must, but it could make things easier to find. For example, you could separate your dress clothes from casual. I keep most dress clothes in my closet, and casual ones I fold in my drawer. I don’t know why, but I tend to color code my clothes. On one side I have all my bright colored clothes, which are usually for spring & summer. Then on the other side I have darker colors. However you like to separate your clothes, just make sure you're able to find where everything is.

All in all, cleaning out your closet may take some time. But it'll prevent the stress of finding things. In the end it'll give you peace and you'll be happy to see a well-organized space :)
